To Obtain a Library Card Membership in the Port Jefferson Free Library is free to all residents of the Port Jefferson Union Free School District. Residents of the Mt. Sinai and Miller Place School Districts may also obtain a card during the time in which a "library contract" is active with those districts. Contract District residents may register at the Port Jefferson Library beginning July 1st each year.
Do You Qualify? Applicants will be issued a card after 2 forms of Proof of Address of the following:
1. Permanent residence, ownership of property or ownership/principal management of a business, all within the Port Jefferson School District..
2. Permanent residence within a contracting school district (such as Mount Sinai or Miller Place) during the time in which a "Library Service Contract" is in force. Register annually as of July 1.
Types of Library Cards
Adult Card-allows full, unrestricted access to all library materials.
Student Card-allows full, unrestricted access to all library materials.
Juvenile Card-restricts access to materials in the Children's Room exclusively.
A library card will be issued to any individual, under 18, whose parent or guardian signs a statement agreeing to be responsible for all materials borrowed on the card. The parent or guardian may determine access restrictions at time of application
Responsibilities and Renewal The patron's signature on the registration form acknowledges his/her responsibility to pay for any fines on overdue material and to pay for all materials damaged or lost while borrowed on the patron's card. The Library reserves the right to suspend borrowing privileges and, when necessary, take appropriate legal action if these responsibilities are not met.

Renewals
Contract District Patrons-annually on July 1.
All others: Bi-annually.
Proof of name and address is required again at this time. The library card is considered permanent and will not be replaced upon registration renewal. Worn cards will be replaced at no cost. Lost or damaged photo I.D. Cards will be replaced at a cost of $3.00, providing all outstanding fines and/or books have been cleared.
Visitor Borrowing Privileges A patron may request temporary borrowing privileges for a visitor residing with them for more than one month. The visitor will be issued a temporary card for up to three months. The registered patron must sign a statement accepting responsibility for all material borrowed on this card. A temporary card may be renewed one time only.

Borrowing Library Materials from the Port Jefferson Free Library.
The library saves money by resource sharing. The procedures listed here will ensure resource usage to its fullest extent. The following limitations on the number of library materials allowed to circulate on any one library card will be observed.

SIX non-fiction videos
SIX fiction DVDs
SIX non-fiction DVDs
SIX items of any other media (example, films, books-on-cassette/disc and audiocassettes)
No more than 30 items may be in circulation to one patron at any time.

All other material

FINES AND FEES There will be no fines on most Port Jefferson Free Library items with the exception of 3 day-DVDs and Blu-Ray DVDs. However patrons will be responsible for the replacement cost of an item if it is not returned to the library at the end of the loan period.
OVERDUE 3-DAY DVDs and BLU-RAY DVDs CHECKED OUT ON OR AFTER JANUARY 2, 2010 WILL INCUR FINES OF $1 PER DAY,PER ITEM,UP TO A MAXIMUM OF $6 PER ITEM. ALL OVERDUE ITEMS BORROWED FROM OTHER LIBRARIES MAY INCUR FINES, BASED ON THE POLICY OF THE LENDING LIBRARY.
BORROWER STOPS Patron borrowing privileges will be suspended for the following reasons:
1. Unpaid fees of $10.00 or more on accounts. 2. Long overdue items. 3. 30 items already in circulation
OVERDUE NOTICES
For all items except 3-day DVDs and Blu-Ray DVDs the first notice will be sent 7 days after due date. Notice will indicate that if the item is not returned within (1) week, a bill for the replacement cost of the item will be sent. Final notice sent (14 ) days after due date of the item.

OVERDUE 3-DAY DVDs CHECKED OUT ON OR AFTER JANUARY 2, 2010 WILL INCUR FINES OF $1 PER DAY, UP TO A MAXIMUM OF $6.
If you are billed and you have the items, just bring them back as soon as you can.
We will waive the bill once you bring the item back.

2. Long overdue items.
